Projects galore

March 3rd, 2010 Will No comments

Lately we’ve been receiving a lot of assignments, mainly projects, that have been keeping me busy for the past few weeks. They mainly concern exam projects or preparations for the exams (in the form of a project) so I guess it’s well worth the time and effort spent. The main projects I’ve been focusing on were made in XML, which involves Java, XSL, C# and Javascript, as well as ASP.NET, the latter being an exam project. Other than that, there are the regular projects in Oracle SQL as well as Java. It’s pretty straightforward this is the main reason for me not having any time to play some games. I do believe it’s more important to get this finished first and then have the opportunity to relax and frag a little.

Got to go back to work, my break’s over.

Borderlands

February 17th, 2010 Will No comments

When gamers, and more specifically FPS players, hear the word RPG and FPS in one game, they usually tend to startle. Borderlands is an example that could totally wipe away this thought as it is a perfect balance between the RPG and FPS aspects. Combine the FPS action with a customizable and level-able character and you get Borderlands. This adds in the fun of both genres and combines them to form a very nice gaming experience. I’ve been playing this game for a few days now and haven’t gotten bored of the missions/quests so far. They all vary and have different forms and ways to approach and complete the objective. I definitely recommend this game to any RPG/FPS enthusiast!

Eye candy vs Functionality

January 21st, 2010 Will No comments

Finding the balance between visual content (read eye candy) and functionality is often a difficult task for a developer. Sure, it’s nice to have an easy to use program with a rich interface that will guide you through the difficult tasks it’s made for. But is it really worth all the time invested during the stage of development? During our programming classes, we have always been pointed out to deliver a working program, not one that has rich text features or any other high-tech functions that only add to the visual experience the user will have. Hence, we are often forced to drop the visual part and work out just the basic needs that need to be fulfilled.

However, corporations nowadays often like to work with a program that has a nice interface and which is easy to use over a fully functional program that lacks the visual experience. So I guess it’s time to move on and invest as much time in developing an interface as we spend on functionality.

Developing applications for a living

January 10th, 2010 Will No comments

People often don’t realize that behind all those rich applications they use, be it on their mobiles, their car or even in appliances at home, were all developed by either a very intellectual individual or a team of programmers and analytics. As the years go by, it’s becoming more straightforward for everyone that everything they buy or use has an automated design and purpose. Factories are virtually transformed into warehouses housing robots doing the hard labor instead of a human being. This is bad for those who used to do these jobs but very time consuming and provides the ability to move the experience and knowledge of these employees to either a new level or at least a higher one.

For the developers, it’s always a joy to see people actually benefit from the applications they’ve designed. In a similar way, developers also strive for glory, i.e. develop something astonishing that could possibly change the world and benefit the people using it. Imagine you would be able to create or enhance something that would save time for a lot of people and at the same time, improve their way of life. People should realize more often that all the these things aren’t as straightforward as they think. It’s always a way of hard work turning into an end-design that took a lot of effort.

Happy New Year!

January 1st, 2010 Will No comments

Just wanted to say happy new year to everyone. Let this year be one full of wealth, happiness and good health. Furthermore, let it be one where there is room for respect and free opinion, something people often tend to forget throughout the year. Respect for one another, respect for your relatives, respect for another human being, respect for living creatures, it’s all important to a certain extent. Christmas used to be the day to make these yearly vows, but since commerce seems to have taken over, New Year has become the new yearly trend to do this on.

The beginning of a new year not only means time passes by once again. It also indicates the beginning of many other things, be it in business or in private relationships. To some people, it’s also the beginning of a new way of life, getting rid of negative feelings and experiences from the past year. All in all, its significance is important to someone, if not everyone. Enjoy the last few hours of this first day of the year and may you enjoy many more to come.
